Sindh Assembly adopts resolution to indefinitely postpone LB polls

* Law minister says govt can’t hold elections due to floods

Staff Report

KARACHI: The Sindh government postponed ‘indefinitely’ the local government elections by amending the ordinance on Tuesday.

The house passed Sindh Local Government (Fifth Amendment) Act, 2010 unanimously. Sindh Law Minister Ayaz Soomro presented the bill in the Sindh Assembly to repeal the Sindh Local Government (Fifth Amendment) Ordinance, 2010, issued earlier by Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad.

The law minister said due to unprecedented floods, it was not impossible to hold the local government elections in the province “in accordance with line provided in Section 179-A of the Sindh Local Government Ordinance, 2010”.

Former president Pervez Musharraf had introduced the local government system under the ordinance.

Senior Minister Pir Mazharul Haq told the house that the MQM leadership had been taken into confidence in postponement of the local government elections.

Earlier, elections were postponed at least three times for specific periods due to differences of opinion between the PPP and MQM on changes in the local government system.

According to Haq, promulgation of the ordinances after each three months to further delay the elections was not suitable for the good governance, therefore this time no time frame had been given.

Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid’s Shaheryar Maher and National People’s Party’s Arif Mustafa Jatoi expressed the apprehensions that the government did not want to hold the local government elections, and these had been postponed for an indefinite period.
