Omar Abdullah seeks to bring India, Pak closer
NEW DELHI: Indian-held Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday said he wanted to bring India and Pakistan closer and sought to initiate a dialogue between New Delhi and pro-independence Kashmiris. Addressing a public gathering in his constituency Ganderbel on the outskirts of Srinagar, Abudullah said, “Let us feel our responsibilities towards the society and the state and shun the tactics of disturbing peace … education and economy of the state.” This was his first pubic appearance in four months since the start of anti-India protests in the disputed region. The chief minister claimed that those responsible for closing down of schools in the region cared little for the education of local children. Stating that he had never made any promise for the resolution of Kashmir dispute, Abdullah claimed that he was first the chief minister of the state who had campaigned strongly for addressing political issues of Jammu and Kashmir politically. The chief minister asserted that he had always stressed the role of pro-independence Kashmiris in the settlement of political issues, and made efforts for dialogue between them and New Delhi. iftikhar gilani
