IG Sindh ordered to take indiscriminate action against criminals
KARACHI: The Supreme Court Karachi registry adjourned the hearing of the Karachi violence suo moto case till Tuesday, Geo News reported. During Monday’s proceedings, Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammed Chaudhry said the apex court wanted to wind up hearing of the case by Friday.
A five member bench of the Supreme Court headed by the Chief Justice is hearing the case. The Chief Justice ordered IG Sindh, Wajid Durani to take indiscriminate action against criminals in all areas and that he had the support of the Supreme Court. IG Sindh informed the court that no torture cells had been discovered during operations.
Earlier the lawyer for the Awami National Party (ANP) Iftikhar Gilani said he could prove that the basis of target killing in the city was not ethnic and everyone knew who was behind the May 12 carnage. He added that statements of Zulfiqar Mirza could not be ignored.
According to the ANP lawyer, the army could be called to Karachi under article 147 so that powers would remain with the provincial government. To this the Chief Justice asked that why were the police, rangers and other agencies not being utilized. The ANP lawyer said the government had the capacity but lacked the will to deal with this issue.
