Conspiracies being hatched to divide Punjab: Nawaz

* PML-N chief says problems besetting Pakistan are the result of nepotism and corruption

Staff Report

LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League-N President Muhammad Nawaz Sharif has said that conspiracies were being hatched to divide and disintegrate Punjab and that if serious notice was not taken of such issues, Pakistan’s future would be in danger.

He said this while addressing a computerised balloting of applications for 2961 vehicles for Lahore division under Khadim-e-Punjab Yellow Cab Scheme at Al Hamra on Wednesday.

He said that had there been supremacy of justice, constitution and law in the country and equal opportunities of employment available to every citizen, Pakistan would not have had to face provincialism and chaos and would have been a developed country. He said that rapid progress was made during the tenure of PML-N and that its leadership brought prosperity to people irrespective of their political affiliation. He said that PML-N was following the same principle and was providing job opportunities to the educated youth in the province without any political consideration. He said that the PML-N had set records of selfless service to the people in its every tenure. He said that employment opportunities were provided to every citizen in the past through Yellow Cab Scheme. He said that permission was granted for the setting up of private airlines without any discrimination. He said that the first motorway of South Asia was constructed in his tenure, adding that it was lamentable that the pace of progress could not be maintained by the rulers that followed him, with the result that even the most backward countries of the region had taken a lead over Pakistan today.

Nawaz Sharif expressed pleasure over Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif providing an honourable source of living to the educated youth irrespective of their political affiliation. He said that political leaders of all the four provinces joined hands for the abolishment of the 8th Amendment under his tenure, but now these political leaders, who had been ready to make any sacrifice for Pakistan, were disillusioned with the country. He said that Pakistan was now standing alone and was considered one of the most corrupt countries of the world. He said that Pakistan was beset with a number of threats and challenges and that there was a need to save the country instead of saving political careers. He said that the PML-N alliance with the MQM came to an end due to the assassination of Hakeem Muhammad Saeed in 1997. He said that no political party dismisses its own government, but he did so as he wanted supremacy of law and did not want to indulge in politics over dead bodies. He said that it was time to take bold decisions to foil the nefarious designs of those elements trying to destroy the country. He said that it was unfortunate that the federal government had been withholding two power plants, having a capacity of 900MW, at Karachi port for the last 10 months, with permission not being granted for their installation in Punjab. He said that the PPP, PML-Q alliance came into existence so that President Zardari could waive the sentence of Moonis Elahi if he was convicted by the court. Nawaz Sharif said that the problems besetting Pakistan were the result of nepotism and corruption.

He said that PML-N would foil designs of those who were trying to weaken the country. He disclosed that he had directed Shahbaz Sharif to arrange for the balloting of a further 20,000 vehicles for the deserving youth.
