No space for three provinces in SC building

Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) building located on the vast area that includes courtrooms, judges’ chambers, bar rooms, conferences rooms, security staff rooms, attorney general’s office and a press room for journalists but, excluding Punjab, no space has been allotted to three other provinces to set up advocates general’s office.

The Punjab AG’s office has been set up in several rooms, but the officials of the other three provinces are forced to run legal affairs in a switch room.

This scribe visited the switch room and saw the officials working in miserable conditions as there was no proper cupboard for the files of high profile cases.

Apart of it, there is no air condition or fresh air facility in the office. One of the officials told Daily Times that they had bought furniture and subscribed telephone connection on their own expenses, which was the responsibility of the SC management. He said that they had approached the administration several times for the allotment of offices, but in vain.

He also expressed the apprehension that files of important cases like Reko Diq matter could be lost in this situation.

It has been learnt from an official of the SC administration that new AG offices would be allotted to small provinces in a new block of the Supreme Court building, which is under construction.

He said that soon after the construction work is completed, the offices would be allotted to three provinces.
