No need for global relief, says Nawaz
Daily Times Monitor
HYDERABAD: Former prime minister and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif, on Sunday, said that there was no need for a global appeal by Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani for support and cooperation in tackling the situation created by devastating rains in Sindh.
Speaking to local media at Magsi House in Hyderabad, he asked the government to immediately declare flood-affected areas as calamity-hit areas. He said that although flood victims should get relief, but there was still no need to appeal for a global support.
Nawaz said that he had no personal agenda, and all political parties should sit together on current situation in the country. “This is Quaed-e-Azam’s Pakistan, but Quaed’s dreams are not coming true,” he said, adding, “The current situation in Pakistan might be hurting Quaed’s soul,” he said with reference to father of the nation.
Talking to journalists at the Circuit House, Nawaz said he had requested the prime minister to pay Rs100,000 to each flood-hit family instead of Rs 25,000 which, he said, was not sufficient. “We are going through financial crisis but the situation is not so grave that we bow down before the international community and seek aid for resolving internal issues,” he told a questioner.
“We have ample resources. We don’t need any foreign aid. If we can become an atomic power than what else we can’t do,” he said. Nawaz regretted that the government had not waived off loans of small farmers in flood-affected areas.
