Karachi Police arrest 12,020 in eight months

* Twenty-six police officers and constables embraced martyrdom, 65 others injured during encounters

Karachi: Karachi Police have arrested 12,020 accused from Jan 01 Sept 08, 2011, during actions against criminal elements, while 26 police officers and constables embraced martyrdom and 65 others injured during encounters.

A police release here Sunday said during last eight months Karachi police arrested 12,020 accused including 5,239 dacoits, 6,427 absconders and 354 wanted accused. Police recovered 4,194 illegal weapons, including 38 SMGs, LMGs; 11 shotguns, 54 rifles, 82 repeaters, 3,648 pistols, 210 revolvers, four carbines, 22 mousers, four RPGs and 20 hand grenades from their possession.

Police during this period busted at least 73 criminal groups. Four dacoits were killed and 898 arrested in the month of January, while in February, during 180 police encounters 76 bandit groups were eliminated, 08 dacoits killed and 661 arrested.

In March, during 138 police encounters 56 gangs were busted, five dacoits killed and 529 arrested. In April in 166 police encounters 58 criminal gangs were eliminated, 08 dacoits killed and 522 arrested.

In the month of May 187 police encounters took place in which 77 gangs were busted, 12 dacoits killed and 635 arrested. In June during 164 police encounters 54 gangs were eliminated, nine dacoits killed and 529 arrested.

In July during 132 police encounters 52 gangs were busted, six dacoits killed and 700 arrested. In August in 124 police encounters 66 gangs were eliminated, 12 dacoits killed and 672 arrested.

From Sept 1 to 8, 2011 there were 27 police encounters in which 11 criminal groups were busted and 214 bandits arrested by police from different parts of the city.

Report also informed that during the police encounters at least 26 police officers and constables embraced martyrdom and 65 others injured from Jan 01 to Sept 08, 2011.

The IGP Sindh Wajid Ali Durrani has directed of police to further improve their performance and concentrate on the elimination of target killers and extortion mafia to ensure better protection of people. ppi
