Parliament set to witness political heat in today’s sessions

By Tanveer Ahmed

ISLAMABAD: The boiling political temperature marked with the accusations and counter accusations between various political parties is set to shift to parliament when its both houses are scheduled to meet on Monday (today).

The recent weeks witnessed some harsh and ugly scenes when political parties entangled in severe mudslinging against each other following the violence in Karachi, which would be again dominant in the proceedings of both the houses.

The press conferences of former Sindh minister Dr Zulfiqar Mirza and MQM Chief Altaf Hussain opened the floodgates of allegations and charges of traitor by political opponents against each other.

Though the both houses are meeting as per their annual schedule to take up the legislative business but it is most likely that unfolding developments in the recent times would push the regular agenda of parliament to corner with the members more interested to discuss the latest political situation, which had created a mess in the political scene.

Though the allegations against MQM and Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik required serious consideration in the eyes of some quarters, the legislators will find parliament a more appropriate forum to speak out their minds.

Altaf’s finger pointing at the Awami National Party (ANP), the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Jamaat-e-Islami would also figure prominently in both the houses.

The National Assembly will meet at 5pm while the Senate session has been summoned at 4:30pm.

President Asif Ali Zardari, though summoned the sessions of both the houses, the PML-N had also filed a requisition under article 54 (3) of the constitution in NA Secretariat for the session to discuss Karachi situation.

The National Assembly also held lengthy debate on Karachi situation during previous session. A parliamentary committee was also constituted which would submit its report and is currently working to finalise its findings.

PML-N Deputy Secretary General Ahsan Iqbal said that his party would take up all the matters of national importance like Karachi law and order, devastating floods in Sindh and bad economic situation in the country.
