Judges’ appointments fall far short of merit: Asma
ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President Asma Jahangir said on Monday that the recent appointments of judges to the superior courts fell far short of merit. Addressing a gathering at the Supreme Court in connection with the start of the New Judicial Year, she said that it was quite apparent that a marked preference was sometime given to elevating judges from subordinate courts to the high courts rather than preferring the elevation of professional lawyers. She said that the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was a valuable tool that the judiciary could use for the empowerment of the vulnerable and the disadvantaged. About the lawyers’ movement, she said that the euphoria associated with it was fading and that the hangover was a painful one. staff report
