Extradition of Musharraf in Bugti murder case

Balochistan govt again seeks more time

By Mohammad Zafar

QUETTA: The Balochistan government has, once again, sought more time for collecting evidence for the extradition of former president Pervez Musharraf and other accused nominated in Nawab Akbar Bugti’s murder case.

The request was made by Balochistan Advocate General (AG) Amanullah Kanrani during a hearing before a division bench, comprising Chief Justice (CJ) Qazi Faez Isa and Justice Hashim Kakar.

The bench expressed strong resentment over the slow pace of investigation and warned that it would issue notice to the interior secretary if he again retracted his statement.

Deputy Attorney General (DAG) Malik Sikandar told the bench that the Balochistan government had so far not submitted the documents requisite for issuing red warrants to Musharraf and other accused nominated in Nawab Bugti’s murder case.

However, CJ asked the AG that during hearing on June 27, he had ensured that Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) would take action against the accused once home secretary made a formal request.

The court also asked him if he had approached the interior secretary about his conflicting statements. “The interior secretary retracted his statements on several occasions, which is tantamount to contempt of court and notice can be issued to him,” the CJ remarked.

When the Balochistan AG was asked that if the Balochistan government had obtained arrest warrants, the AG said the government was still collecting evidence and after completion of the process measures would be taken for arrest warrants.

He said that evidence was not enough to ensure extradition of the accused, and more evidence was needed in conformity with international laws.
