Failure of drainage system causes miseries
By Haris Hanif
KARACHI: The metropolis witnessed multiple challenges owing to the failure of its drainage system exposed by ongoing heavy rainfalls.
A 12-year-old girl, Tabassum, who was suffering from some ailment, died because she could not reach a hospital in time as no ambulance or vehicle was available to lift her from her house inundated by one-feet-deep rainwater near City Railway Colony.
Rainwater also entered the emergency and others wards of Civil Hospital Karachi and Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, creating troubles to patients and medical staff while the situation at other hospitals was not different.
Rainwater accumulated on streets and roads not only crippled routine life of the country’s economical hub but also claimed several lives. Many patients in serious condition, including pregnant women, also stranded in rainwater and faced great trouble.
The rainwater also restrained teams of Karachi Electric Supply Company from repairing under grounded cable faults in affected areas.
Transport also remained thin, while shops and major markets were shut. Many people could not reach their offices and hospitals, as vehicles went out of order in various parts of the city.
The damaged roads and manholes covered with rainwater caused injuries to passersby and motorcyclists.
The officials of City District Government Karachi and town administrations were seen comforting citizens in press releases rather than on roads. Many issues could have been resolved if the city’s drainage system had been maintained and revived on priority basis and with sincerity.
