Verdict reserved in Karachi suo moto case


KARACHI: The Supreme Court of Pakistan (SC) has adjourned the hearing of the Karachi violence suo moto case and reserved its verdict, Geo News reported.

According to the sources, the SC ordered law enforcement agencies (LEAs) to facilitate the prosecutors.

The court further instructed that all the Deputy Inspector Generals (DIGs) must ensure there is no extortion in their areas while the police should inform the court in written about the progress against criminals on a daily basis.

A five-member special bench of the SC comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali, Justice Sarmad Jalal Usmani, Justice Amer Hani Muslim and Justice Ghulam Rabbani heard the case.

During today's proceedings the AIG informed the bench that extortion has decreased and two extortionists were arrested on Wednesday.

Counsel for the federation Babar Awan continued his arguments. He pointed out that all the institutions were working including the Parliament. Only Karachi is not functioning, Justice Sarmad Jalal Usmani replied to Awan.

The Chief Justice remarked that the situation was worsening day by day this had been pointed out several times. Unconstitutional acts should stop now, the CJ said. We want to tell everyone that nothing except the rule of law and democracy is accepted in the country.

On August 22 CJP Iftikhar Chaudhry took suo moto notice of Karachi's deteriorating security situation and directed the government to submit a record regarding the ongoing unrest in the metropolis. The CJP on August 26 ordered to hear the case in Karachi from the 29th.
