PML-N chairman asks govt to come up with Kashmir issue solution

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chairman Raja Zafarul Haq on Monday asked the government to step up its diplomatic efforts for the just solution of the Kashmir issue as per the resolutions of the UN Security Council (UNSC).

Speaking at a news conference at the party’s central secretariat, he said that the UN General Assembly was in session and the government should have taken up the friendly countries of Pakistan into confidence for affectively raising the Kashmir issue on the UN platform.

Haq urged the UN to undertake solid steps towards concrete progress on its resolutions and commitments with the people of Kashmir to resolve the dispute for durable peace in the region. He also called upon the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) to raise the Kashmir issue on the UN platform and support Pakistan’s stance over it. The PML-N chairman was of the view that the Kashmir dispute could only be resolved while taking into account the aspirations of the people of Kashmir. About India’s move to become a permanent member of the UN Security Council, he said that a country should not be given permanent membership of the UNSC, which was reluctant to abide by its resolutions.

To a question, Haq expressed concerns over US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta’s threatening remarks against Pakistan and also called upon the government to formulate regular rules of engagements with its relations with the US. He said that the world community must recognise the sacrifices of Pakistan, which was suffering more than any other country due to terrorism.

The PML-N leader also criticised former president General (r) Pervez Musharraf for joining the war against terrorism without taking parliament into confidence following the 9/11 incident. Referring to the elections on the seat vacated by PML-N’s AJK leader Raja Farooq Haider from Muzaffarabad, he urged the AJK chief election commissioner to ensure free, fair and transparent election on the vacant seat. staff report
