Pakistan, US step up contacts to defuse growing tensions
* US envoy meets Zardari to discuss bilateral relations
* Holds second meeting with foreign secretary
* Munter says Washington wants good ties with Islamabad
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and the United States on Tuesday stepped up contacts to defuse tensions triggered by American allegations that ISI was waging a proxy war in Afghanistan through the Haqqani network, with US envoy Cameron Munter meeting President Asif Zardari besides a meeting with Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir for second time in as many days.
US Ambassador called on President Zardari at Presidency and Pak-US bilateral relations were discussed during the meeting, a statement issued by the Presidency read. Munter met Bashir at the Foreign Ministry to discuss ways to reduce tensions and bring relations between the estranged allies in the war on terror back on an even keel.
Pakistan once again demanded of US take notice of attacks inside Pakistan from Afghanistan.
Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir told Munter that attacks inside Pakistan from Afghanistan was a matter of serious concern. The US should take notice of these attacks. Pakistan wants close relations with the US, he added. Blame game is no solution to the problems, he maintained. The US should ensure provision of credible evidence to Pakistan, he underlined.
Munter said that there was trust deficit between the US and Pakistan and his country did not want to see Pakistan unstable and Washington wants good relations with Islamabad. agencies
