No compromise on national security: President, PM

* Zardari, Gilani discuss current political, security situation

* President rejects PML-N’s proposal of calling parliament’s joint meeting

ISLAMABAD Sept 27 (Online): President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani agreed in principle that no compromise would be made on the national security and sovereignty of the country and that all the decisions made during the all parties conference would be implemented in letter and spirit.

Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani on Tuesday called on President Asif Ali Zardari and discussed current political and security situation in the country.

In the meeting held at Presidency, the devastation caused by floods in Sindh and the relief and rehabilitation measures were also discussed.

The upcoming meeting of political leaders on Thursday (tomorrow) in order to evolve a national consensus on current situation also came under discussion.

The president reposed confidence in the ability of the democratic leadership to stand united at all times and expressed the hope that the country’s political leadership would be able to reach consensus on issues of national concerns.

Later, Defence Minister Chaudhry Ahmed Mukhtar, Secretary General to the President Salman Faruqui and Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir also joined the two leaders.

Pakistan’s response and policy in regards to recent US accusations was discussed in this meeting. The US has accused Pakistan and its armed forces of supporting the Haqqani network. US officials have also advocated that aid to the Pakistan be tied with action against the Haqqani network.

President Zardari again made it clear that democratic government was passing through critical time and it was dire need to be united, adding that no compromise would be made on the sovereignty and integrity of the country.

President welcomed the move of Gilani to call the APC, terming it an enriching sign for country’s national interests. The APC would discuss the tense diplomatic standoff with US and to decide a future course of action.

The conference is expected to discuss Pak-US ties and the country’s security situation. Sources further added that during the course of the meeting, president and the prime minister highly acclaimed the services and support given by China to assist Pakistan in such a critical and challenging situation. The president rejected a Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz proposal that a joint session of parliament be called to evolve a clear policy after tension between US and Pakistan, sources said.
