Senators slam govt over worsening law, order

ISLAMABAD: Expressing serious concerns over the deteriorating law and order situation across the country, particularly in Karachi and Quetta, the Upper House on Monday decided to hold a detailed discussion on the issue on Thursday and Friday.

Both treasury and opposition senators condemned the government over the worsening law and order situation in the country. They were of the view that there was no rule of law in the country and that a particular sect, Shia, was especially being targeted. They also condemned the target killings in Karachi and terrorist activities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including bomb blasts and attacks on security agencies.

After the beginning of Senate session at the Parliament House, Senator Hasil Bezinjo requested the House to leave the agenda of the day and discuss the law and order situation instead, particularly that in Karachi, Quetta and Gilgit-Baltistan. “These are matters of national importance and need to be discussed,” he said. Opposition leader Senator Ishaq Dar supported Bezinjo, saying that the matter of law and order was important and needed a detailed discussion, but added that presence of the interior minister was important for the discussion of the matter. The interior minister should explain what steps the government had taken for improvement of the law and order situation in the country, he demanded. Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Senator Tahir Hussain Mashhadi said that sectarian violence was threatening the country. The issue required proper explanation from the interior minister with relevant facts and figures, he said. He suggested that senators should wake up the government, ISI, MI and other law enforcement agencies. The agencies were doing nothing but involved in corruption while the whole country was in grip of horror due to the worsening law and order, he said, adding that the issue had become a matter of life and death for the country. Senator Rafique Rajwana said the interior minister should brief the House about the measures taken to improve the security situation across the country. PML-N member Raja Zafarul Haq was of the view that target killings were rampant in the country but no one was being prosecuted. Violence across the country had become a threat for the integrity of the country, he said. He stressed the need for early handling of the law and order situation to save the situation from deteriorating further. Another PML-N senator, Hamza, said Quetta had become a slaughterhouse for a particular group of people, who were being killed after identifying them by checking their identity cards. Such violence was bringing a bad name to the country among international community, he added. ijaz kakakhel.
