PM attends WEF’s opening session in Tianjin

TIANJIN: Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf on Tuesday joined the world leaders and leading business figures at the sixth annual meeting of World Economic Forum that kicked off with an aim to plan new business model for a sustainable global economy. China’s Premier Wen Jiabao opened the plenary session of the Forum, also known as Summer Davos, at the Meijiang Convention Centre, attended by some 2,000 business, government and civil society leaders. Prime Minister Ashraf attended the opening session of the New Champions 2012 along with Finance Minister Dr Abdul Hafeez Sheikh and other officials of his delegations. Wen Jiabao in his welcome address said Chinese economy avoided the downward pressure through effective measures including shift in economic model, better allocation of resources and adopting scientific approach. He said China’s GDP grew by 10.7 percent moving it from sixth to second rank. He stressed sustainable development by focusing on spurring consumer demand, promoting innovation, conserving resources and protecting the environment. “Although growth is slowing down, it is more stable. We will give greater priority to stabilising growth and maintaining the continuity and stability of our policies,” he said. Professor Klaus Schwab, Founder and Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum, hailed the “responsible and responsive role” that China had played in stabilising the global economy. app
