‘Short circuit caused Baldia Town factory inferno’

Staff Report

KARACHI: Short circuit in Baldia Town’s factory is the main reason for the horrendous fire that engulfed 289 lives and not terrorist activity.
Investigation team on Baldia Town fire incident’s head Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Farooq Awan said this after examining the video footages of close circuit cameras fixed in the factory and releasing them to the media during a press briefing at the Special Investigation Unit office on Friday.
Speaking on the occasion, Awan said that there were 20 close circuit cameras fixed in the factory, out of which only six were working. He further said that the main reason behind such a large number of casualties was that there was only one exit. He said that investigations are being conducted on locks at the exit gates and malfunctioning of other cameras.
He further said that the viewpoint surfaced initially that the factory owner was receiving threats for extortion, has not been proved so far.
SP Saqib Sultan also insisted that the eruption of fire on such a large scale was nothing but an accident. He said that negligence, pertaining to labour laws, was witnessed on several levels at the factory.
He added that statements of several eyewitnesses have been recorded and would now be analysed. He hoped that police would complete the investigation within three days.
