Malik Riaz contempt case: SC reserves verdict over AG as prosecutorISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court resumed its hearing against real estate tycoon Malik Riaz for contempt of court on Monday and the two-judge bench headed by Justice Ejaz Afzal reserved its verdict on whether the Attorney General can serve as prosecutor in the case.
The Supreme Court will announce the verdict in the next hearing scheduled for 20th September.
During the hearing Justice Ejaz Afzal told Attorney General Irfan Qadir that it will not be appropriate for the Attorney General to serve as prosecutor in the case.
Meanwhile the Attorney General also submitted a request to make Chief Justice of Pakistan, Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry a witness in the case, adopting the position that judges have appeared before the court in the past.
Attorney General Qadir added that in order to prove Malik Riaz wrong it is important for the Chief Justice to appear before the court.
Attorney General Irfan Qadir has also submitted a request to make Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry the prosecutions witness.
Malik Riaz’s counsel Abdul Basit said Riaz should be freed if the Chief Justice does not appear as witness in the case since the contempt proceedings began as a result of Malik Riaz scandalizing and levelling serious charges at the Chief Justice at a press conference.
