Pakistan to cull 21,000 infected sheep: officialKARACHI: Following the directives of Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah, Karachi Commissioner, Roshan Ali Shaikh has ordered the culling of about 21,268 infected Australian sheep imported from Bahrain.
The chief minister had taken notice and issued directives for the culling of the sheep on September 12, after his relief adviser Haleem Adil Shaikh sent a letter apprising him of the situation.
“A Pakistani importer brought these sheep to Pakistan but we ordered them to be culled after receiving reports based on laboratory tests”, said Haleem.
The animals arrived some 10 days ago from Bahrain, which had in turn imported them from Australia and refused to accept them after finding they were infected. He further said that action should also be taken against the person who had imported the infected animals.
“The sheep are infected with scabby mouth disease which is contagious and would have affected thousands of people like plague. Consider the gravity of the situation that would have arisen had the sheep been sold before or on the occasion of Eidul Azha”, said Haleem. agencies
