Dual nationality holders cannot contest election in future, decides ECP
ISLAMABAD: No dual nationality holder will be eligible to contest general elections in future while all the members of the Parliament and Provincial assemblies will be administered fresh oath of office, Geo News reported.
This was decided at a high level meeting of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) here Monday, said the Secretary ECP Ishtiaq Ahmed while briefing the media about the body's decisions.
He said dual nationality holders will not be eligible to take part in general elections in future, adding 11 MPs were de-notified after the Supreme Court's verdict in this regard. However, he added that Interior Minister Rehman Malik's name is not included in the 11 MPs unseated by the ECP.
The reference in connection with the Interior Minister has been sent to the Chairman Senate who if fails to take action against him within 30 days, then the ECP will itself initiate action in this regard. Until that time, Rehman Malik will continue to remain a Senator and Federal Minister, he added.
The Secretary ECP clarified that the Supreme Court had not disqualified Rehman Malik in its verdict on dual nationality case.
The secretary further informed that ECP has initiated action against 12 MPs over dual nationality and petitions have been moved to sessions judge concerned.
He said these members of national and provincial assemblies had submitted fake documents to the ECP.
