PM for broad-based ‘national consensus’

* Nawaz urges political forces to rise to the occasion and evolve consensus

* National security top priority

* Every possible help to be provided to Sindh for peace

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Monday said that national security is the topmost priority of the government and all available resources would be utilised to ensure it.

He was chairing a high-level meeting to review the overall security situation of the country. The meeting discussed issues pertaining to national security, including the internal and external threats being faced by
the country. The prime minister said that all political forces must rise to the occasion so that national consensus could be evolved to address the problems faced by the country.

He said that a broad-based national consensus among all stakeholders would surely enable the government to find enduring solutions to the problems being faced by the country. Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Chief of Army Staff Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, Special Assistant to the PM, Tariq Fatemi and ISI Director General Lt Gen Muhammad Zaheerul Islam attended the meeting.

Prime Minister Nawaz said that the federal government will extend every possible assistance to the Sindh government for restoration of peace in Karachi. Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali briefed the participants of the meeting on law and order situation in the country with particular focus on Karachi. He also presented a report to the prime minister on Karachi situation. The prime minister directed the interior minister to finalise proposals to be presented in the forthcoming federal cabinet meeting on Karachi so that a comprehensive strategy could be evolved to improve the situation in the city.

Prime Minister Nawaz also said the government will take on board all political parties for political stability and development in Balochistan. He was talking to Balochistan Chief Minister Dr Abdul Malik and Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party chief Mehmoud Khan Achakzai who called on him.

The prime minister said every possible assistance would be extended to the Balochistan government for maintenance of law and order and rapid development of the province. Matters relating to cabinet formation and law and order in the province also came under discussion during the meeting. The chief minister briefed the prime minister regarding action taken to curb the menace of terrorism and protection of the people. agencies
