Court adjourns new Islamabad airport case
ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) on Monday adjourned a case regarding the construction of the new Islamabad airport until September 3. The court also passed remarks that no one seemed interested in pursuing the case.
A three-judge bench, consisting of Chief Justice (CJ) Iftikhar Muhammad Chauhdry Justice Jawwad S Khawaja and Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed, resumed the case of alleged corruption and illegalities in the construction of the new Islamabad airport.
During the proceedings, the CJ asked Additional Attorney General (AAG) Shah Khawar about the federation’s reply regarding the appointment of civil aviation DG, asking it was according to the rules or not.
Khawar apprised the bench that under the Civil Aviation Ordinance 1982 there were two qualifications necessary to be appointed DG, either the service of the person under consideration should be 18 years or he has been the pilot in command.
He further informed the bench that according to the reply of the defence minister, Khalid Chauhdry had fulfilled the criteria of this post and hence his appointment was justified. He requested the bench for some time to file an accurate reply in this regard, as he had no clear instructions from the competent authority.
The CJ said that still no appropriate and satisfactory reply had been made by the federation, which showed their lack of interest. If no one was willing to pursue this case in the true manner and spirit then the court had to impose liability on the individuals responsible, the CJ added.
Meanwhile, Obaidur Rahman Abbasi, counsel for Civil Aviation Authority, appeared and informed the bench that the process of fuel handling was completed and the contract had been awarded to the Pakistan State Oil and Attock Oil Company, who would conduct the operation as a joint venture.
He further stated that although Al-Tariq Construction Limited had accomplished 95 percent of it’s work on the airport, but the company had caused delays in the whole process of construction. app
