SHC for freedom of citizens’ movement
KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Wednesday directed local authorities to ensure that freedom of movement of citizens as guaranteed under the law and observed it should not be affected by placing barricades in the city on pretext of security concerns.
A division bench SHC headed by Chief Justice Mushir Alam was hearing a petition seeking removal of blockades installed at Bilawal House, Clifton and in other parts of city in name of security.
During hearing, SSP South told the court that according to reports of intelligence agencies, there were threats to the life of president of Pakistan and owing to security concerns the road from Bilawal Chowrangi leading towards Park Tower was blocked. However, alternative routes have been arranged to facilitate public.
He said that many consulates are located in South district and many of them are under threat; therefore, streets around those consulates have been blocked.
The court observed that it was well aware of the fact that it was responsibility of government to provide safety to dignitaries but it also know that right of freedom of citizens is guaranteed under the Constitution as explained by article 15 of Constitution.
The bench directed the advocate general Sindh to look into matter and assist the court in this regard. The court also issued notice to president SHC Bar Association and secretary Sindh Bar Council, asking them to assist the court in this regard. ppi
