SC gives govt a week to appoint chairman
By Hasnaat Malik
ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) has given a week deadline to the federal government regarding appointment of National Accountability Bureau (NAB) chairman.
The court has asked the government to appoint NAB chairman until September 13 at all cost “otherwise the issue would create complications”. A three-member bench of the court, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, heard a petition, filed by Taimur Alam. During the hearing, Attorney General of Pakistan (AGP) Muneer A Malik told the bench that the government understands the problems being faced by the bureau due to absence of its chief. He stated that there was a delay in the appointment’s process because earlier names proposed for the office were dropped on technical reasons. He further said that new names would be initiated soon as meetings were also being held in this regard with Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly Khursheed Shah.
The AGP said that he had discussed the matter with the authorities concerned, adding that he was informed that the government wanted early appointment of NAB chairman. The chief justice said several high-profile cases were pending in courts and the government should appoint NAB chairman as early as possible.
