Former MQM MPA’s arrest stops Karachi's wheel
KARACHI: The business and routine activities of life came to a standstill in the port city of Karachi as a result of violence following the arrest of Nadeem Hashmi, Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s (MQM) former member Sindh assembly.
The former MQM MPA Nadeem Hashmi was arrested on charges of two policemen's murder, sources said.
Schools, shops and petrol pumps were forced to close down while several vehicles were set ablaze across the city.
Protestors’ burnt tyres blocking roads for the vehicular traffic. As a result, public transport also vanished, causing hardship to the commuters. The Karachi transporters Itehad announced that transport will remain suspended in light of the situation in the city.
Protests also erupted in Hyderabad, Sukkur, Mirpurkhas and other cities across the province.
The former MQM MPA was arrested last night in connection with firing on a police mobile in which two policemen were killed. A case against Hashmi was lodged in the Haidery police station. He has been charged with murder under section 302, section 7 of Anti-Terrorism act and for snatching official arms under section 397.
The arrest has been condemned by MQM chief, Altaf Hussain who said that when police officials were contacted over the arrest of party workers, they told that the orders given from the ‘top’ stated that wherever there are reports of the law being violated, the MQM unit-in-charge of the area should be arrested.
