Father who threw daughter into river sent on five day remand
LAHORE: A local court on Wednesday sent an accused who had thrown his over a year old daughter into the Ravi river for not having a son, on five day physical remand.
Wife of the accused told the court that his husband didn’t throw the child instead she fell into the Ravi accidentally.
The magistrate ordered the authorities to recovered the bodies of the deceased.
Shahdara police Tuesday arrested the man and registered a case against the accused, Umar, a resident of Salamatpura, Baghbanpura, under Section 302 (murder offence) of Pakistan Penal Code on the complaint of his wife, Sumera. However, police and rescuers are yet to recover the victim from the river. The victim was identified as Zainab.
A senior police officer said that during the initial interrogation, the accused, a rickshaw driver by profession, had told the police that he had contracted marriage with Sumera a couple of years back. He had two daughters but not any son over which he used to scuffle with his wife on a regular basis.
Four days back, Umar planned a picnic along with his wife and two daughters at the Ravi. During the picnic, he threw one of his daughters, Zainab, into the river and started raising a hue and cry that she was lost.
However, Sumera smelled the rat and filed an application with Shahdara police, alleging that Umar had killed her daughter by throwing her into the river. She said that he was keen to have a son and he had taken the step over not having a male child.
Police registered a case against Umar and arrested him. Initially, Umar denied the allegation, saying that his daughter had slipped (lost) at the picnic place. However, Umar confessed to his crime soon after the police used traditional ways of investigation.
The accused stated before the police that he wanted a son but he had two daughters from his wife. He further stated that he could not afford the expenses of his home through rickshaw driving and was perturbed over financial conditions, as well. He confessed to having scuffles with his wife and that he had taken the extreme step over the aforesaid reasons.
