Candlelight vigil held on eve of first anniversary of Baldia factory fire

KARACHI: Labour leaders, families of the deceased workers as well as trade union and civil society activists on Tuesday took part in a candlelight vigil in front of the burnt building of the factory to observe the first anniversary of the worst-ever industrial accident at Ali Enterprises at SITE Area, Baldia.
Touchy scenes were witnessed as the members of the victims’ families, including women, children and relatives of the deceased workers, remembered their loved ones.
Civil society activists, carrying banners and placards, raised slogans in support of their demand of bringing the culprits to book.
They also demanded provision of health and safety facilities at all workplaces, and initiation of inspections of factories across the country.
A large number of workers of nearby factories also took part in the candlelight vigil and paid tribute to the victims. A one-minute silence was also observed on the occasion. pr
