Sartaj Aziz meets Salman Khurshid in Bishkek
BISHKEK: Advisor to prime minister on Foreign Affairs, Sartaj Aziz met with Indian External Affiars Minister Salman Khurshid on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Orgaisation (SCO) on Friday.
Following the meeting, Aziz said both sides were in agreement that it was important to establish and respect the ceasefire agreement of 2003. “We should work together to use our existing mechanism more intensively to reduce tension and to ensure that future violations do not occur.”
Meanwhile, Khurshid said that a possible meeting between Prime Ministers Sharif and Singh on the margins of the United National General Assembly (UNGA) would require a conducive atmosphere. “If there isn’t peace and tranquility on the border and the Line of Control then all out efforts go to waste frankly because that is the most critical confidence building and that is the most critical commitment that has been made by both countries together and both have to live up to it.”
A possible meeting between Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh is expected on the sidelines of the UNGA at the end of September.
