Dar, Shah discuss NAB chief appointment on telephone
ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Finance Senator Ishaq Dar has made a telephonic contact with Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah over the matter of National Accountability Bureau (NAB) chairman appointment, Geo News reported Saturday.
During the conversation, Ishaq Dar told the opposition leader, who is currently in London, that the prime minister is expecting the names of two candidates from him and that they need to expedite the process of appointing the NAB chairman, following the Supreme Court’s orders.
Khursheed Shah told that he will return to Pakistan on September 19 and will step up the efforts to build consensus over the matter.
Federal Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, while talking to Geo News, confirmed about the telephonic contact and told that the NAB chief will be appointed soon after Khursheed Shah’s return.
Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif had directed Ishaq Dar to contact the Opposition Leader Syed Khursheed Shah in London and ask him to send two names for the office of the NAB chairman.
Khursheed Shah is currently in London on a private visit. The government and opposition had earlier agreed that further consultation on the appointment of the NAB chairman will be made after Khursheed gets back home, but now the premier wants to make the appointment as soon as possible.
Two months back in a letter, the prime minister had proposed two names — Justice (R) Rehmat Hussain Jaffrey and Khawaja Zaheer — for the office. In response, Khursheed Shah proposed Justice (R) Mamoon Qazi and Justice (R) Sardar Raza Khan. However, Justice (R) Mamoon declined the offer.
Later, Khursheed proposed the name of former Chairman FPSC Justice (R) Rana Bhagwandas but he too declined the offer. Nawaz and Khursheed twice met to sort out the issue and it was decided that both will forward fresh names for the post.
