Amn Committee leader Zafar Baloch killed

KARACHI: Zafar Baloch, the leader of banned outfit People’s Amn Committee (PAC), was shot dead along with his aide at Bazinjo Chowk, Lyari on Wednesday.
Zafar Baloch was on his way in Afshani Gali when at least eight armed men, riding four motorbikes, opened fire injuring Zafar Baloch, Muhammad Ali Ghani, Hasnan Baloch and Usman Baloch.
The injured were rushed to hospital where doctor pronounced Zafar Baloch and Muhammad Ali Ghani dead.
Tension prevailed in parts of city, including Lyari, Malir, Dalmia and Gadap, after the killing, as a number of gunmen resorted to aerial firing. Miscreants also set tires on fire in the surroundings of Lyari in protest against the killing of Zafar Baloch. Commercial and non-commercial activities were also suspended in the vicinity.
Additional contingents of law enforcement, including Rangers and police, reached the troubled areas to maintain peace.
Zafar Baloch had escaped a grenade attack a couple of years ago. He joined PAC in 2008 and rose to prominence when he came under an attack in Lyari.
Sources in police said that the slain PAC leader was nominated in several criminal cases, including murder, kidnappings for ransom and extortion. No case had been registered until the filing of this report while SSP Bashir Memon said that it was an act of targeted killing.
