Cabinet approves anti-terrorism amendment bill
ISLAMABAD: The Federal Cabinet approved the draft of amendments in the Anti-Terrorism Bill 2013 on Friday.
The bill was presented by Federal Minister for Science and Technology Zahid Hamid and includes recommendations of the special committee formed by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
According to the amendments proposed in the bill, witnesses, judges and prosecutors in cases related to terrorism should be provided security. The support of intelligence and security agencies can be taken during interrogation of terrorism suspects. The bill also includes an amendment for terrorism cases to be tried within 30 days, while suspects in such cases can be held in custody for 90 days.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said that the government wanted to make an anti-terrorism bill which transcended political vendetta. The prime minister added that he had been victimised due to the bill and had been sentenced for 27 years under it.
The prime minister also spoke of the targeted operation in Karachi and how it was yielding positive results. The prime minister said that law and order in the port city was a top priority of the government.
