Nawaz, Shah fail to reach consensus on NAB chief

* PM nominates Justice (r) Ejaz Chaudhry for slot

* Opp leader says decision shouldn’t be taken in haste

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Opposition Leader in the National Assembly (NA) Syed Khurshid Shah have failed to reach a consensus on the appointment of National Accountability Bureau (NAB) chairman.

The prime minister has nominated Justice (r) Ejaz Chaudhry for the slot and both sides will hold further discussions in this regard.

After meeting with the prime minister, Khurshid Shah told the media on Saturday, “This is not a game… whoever assumes this office he will have to give in writing that he will not subject any person to personal vendetta. Therefore, no haste should be shown on this count.”

“How a job which could not be completed in three months can be done within two or three days?” he said.

“It is our endeavour to bring a non controversial person so that the menace of corruption could be curbed,” he said.

“We are trying that this matter is decided ahead of PM departure to UN and if this decision is not [taken] before the PM leaves for UN then the issue will be decided on his return,” the PPP leader said.

Corruption is a major issue facing the country, he said, adding that NAB chairman should, therefore, be such a person who could hold across the board and impartial accountability process. Separately, PPP leader Aitzaz Ahsan said that his party’s government had taken back two names suggested for the office of NAB chief after they were opposed by Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan.

Talking to the media, Aitzaz said that the constitutional role of opposition leader in the National Assembly for appointment of NAB chairman could not be challenged.

Now it is up to the sitting government that how much importance it gives to the opposition leader’s suggestion, he added. He expressed the hope that the issue of NAB chief appointment would be settled in the next few days. agencies
