Nisar briefs NA on Peshawar bombing

ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan informed the National Assembly that four security personnel were deployed at the church in Peshawar during Sunday’s suicide bombings.

“One FC personnel was killed while a police head constable was injured in the attack,” Nisar said.

According to the interior minister, the first bomber detonated his suicide vest at the exit point of the church, while the second attacker detonated his explosive laden vest in the courtyard. “It was the second attack which caused the major damage.”

Nisar praised the role of the leaders of the Christian community following the attacks. “The Christian community and leadership exhibited exemplary patience in the face of such a tragedy.”

The interior minister also referred to the staff of the Lady Reading Hospital as heroes. “There was an emotionally charged crowd of thousands gathered at the Lady Reading Hospital. The staff under these difficult circumstances ensured that the injured received treatment.”

Nisar said a meeting of representatives of the Christian community would be called in the next few days to formulate a national policy and network for their security. He added that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government was already working on such measures on the provincial level.

The interior minister further said that the federal government would bear the reconstruction cost of the church damaged in the blast, while the provincial government’s requirement for the treatment and rehabilitation of the injured would also be met.

Commenting on the probe of the blast, Nisar said he was in contact with intelligence and security agencies. He mentioned that there were no phone conversations intercepts regarding the attack which was unusual.
