Pakistan keen to strengthen ties with UK, says president
ISLAMABAD: President Mamnoon Hussain on Tuesday said Pakistan was keen to further strengthen its strategic and co-operative ties with the United Kingdom in diverse fields with focus on trade and economic ties.
The president was talking to British Home Secretary, Theresa May, who called on him here at the Aiwan-e-Sadr.
Pak-UK bilateral relations were discussed in the meeting.
Theresa felicitated the president on assuming his responsibilities as head of the State and expressed the hope that Pak-UK relations would further strengthen during his tenure. The president thanked Theresa and said Pakistan and the UK had long-standing relations based on shared interests and mutual respect. Discussing bilateral relations, the president expressed satisfaction on the progress made in Enhanced Strategic Dialogue and urged for more concerted efforts to jack up bilateral trade volume to new heights adding that there exists huge potential of trade and investment that needs to be explored for the mutual benefit of the people of the two countries.
The president appreciated the British government’s support and advocacy of Pakistan’s case for greater market access of Pakistani goods to the EU and expressed the hope that British government would also continue to extend its valuable support for inclusion of Pakistan in the GSP Plus scheme. Discussing regional situation, Hussain said Pakistan considers regional peace and security vital for its own socio-economic interests and it would continue to support all efforts aimed at promoting peace, stability and development in the region. app
