Democracy only solution to ills in Pakistan: Nawaz

NEW YORK: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said on Thursday that there is no other way to overcome the multifarious problems facing Pakistan except following the democratic path. Nawaz called on a delegation of US-based Pakistan Muslim League-N office-bearers and workers to seek their help in strengthening the democratic foundations in Pakistan, party sources said. Nawaz said the recent transition in Pakistan from one democratic government to another augurs well for the country. A good democratic precedent has been established and must be carried on, he said, adding this was the time to look forward, not backwards, and move decisively to confront the challenges. In this context, he said, he does not believe in the politics of revenge. The prime minister told his party workers that he would never compromise on national interests, which are supreme. PML-N US Preisdent Ruhail Dar expressed confidence in the leadership of Prime Minister Nawaz and assured full support in his nation-building efforts. Meanwhile, during a meeting between Prime Minister Nawaz and Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Pakistan and Qatar agreed to transform their relations into “mutually beneficial economic partnership”, it was officially stated. The discussions focused in particular on cooperation in the energy and power sectors, including liquefied natural gas.
