Nawaz meets Open Society chief in US

NEW YORK – Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif called Open Society Foundations Chairman George Soros on here Wednesday.
The prime minister informed Soros about the steps taken by the government to universalize primary education and increase investment in Pakistan. He also appreciated the foundation’s work in Pakistan, including its rehabilitation and reconstruction projects after the 2005 earthquake and the recent floods, as well as establishment of Lahore-based think-tank the Institute of Development and Economic Alternatives.
Nawaz informed him about investment opportunities in Pakistan. Soros is a fund manager and philanthropist. Open Society Foundations is working in the areas of education, human rights, law and justice, media and transparency. The prime minister arrived in New York on Wednesday afternoon to address the UN General Assembly.
During his stay in New York, the prime minister would also be holding bilateral meetings with his counterparts and co-hosting the UN peacekeeping summit with Vice President Joe Biden, the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, president of Rwanda and the prime ministers of Japan and Bangladesh.
