NEW YORK: Scores of freedom-seeking Kashmiris staged a demonstration in front of the UN building on Saturday as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the UN General Assembly. Shouting “We want freedom from India”, the demonstrators raised vociferous slogans urging the international community to raise its voice against rights abuses by Indian security forces in Kashmir. The Kashmiris, in a big number, also carried placard calling on UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to implement its resolutions that provide for the exercise of right of self-determination by the Kashmiri people. They also called for an end to the atrocities being committed by Indian occupation forces in Kashmir. Azad Kashmir President Sardar Yaqoob Khan, Sardar Sawar Khan, a former member of the Kashmir Council, and Raheel Dar, president of the PML-N USA, said in their speeches that the unresolved Kashmir dispute demands immediate attention of the world body. The speakers rejected the Indian prime minister’s stand on Kashmir and said the relevant UN resolutions explicitly state that it is an internationally recognised disputed area and that the people of Jammu and Kashmir should be given the long-denied right to determine their future.
