ISLAMABAD: A district and sessions court on Saturday ordered the registration of a first information report (FIR) against 11 people, including Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, over the death of three protesters during anti-government demonstrations last month.
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) had sought the court’s intervention for lodging of the case after police allegedly refused to register an FIR against PM Nawaz, his brother Shahbaz Sharif, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, Railways Minister Saad Rafique, the Islamabad police chief, the Islamabad deputy commissioner and four others.
The district court ordered the Secretariat police to register a case against PM and 10 others, while disposing of a petition filed by the PTI over the alleged killing of three political activists on August 30. The party had approached the Secretariat Police Station for the registration of an FIR against the PM and 10 others over the August 30 killings during the protests by the PTI and the Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) in the capital.
The PTI had filed the request days after the August 30 violence, but following the police’s failure to register a case, the party approached the sessions court under Clause 22-A of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC).
Additional District and Sessions judge Justice Shahrukh Arjumand issued the order on Saturday, directing the police to register the case. Qazi Nazeef was the counsel for the PTI.
The orders came days after the capital police registered a criminal case against the prime minister, some federal ministers and police officials on an order issued by a district and sessions court over the alleged killing of PTI/PAT workers. The court directed the police to follow the law after which the police registered the case under Section 7 of the ATA and Sections 302, 324, 148 and 149 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).
Prior to the FIR registered on Saturday, the Lahore High Court (LHC) had also ordered the registration of an FIR against the top leadership of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) in connection with the June 17 Model Town incident, which resulted in the death of several PAT workers.
The FIR was finally registered on August 29 against 21 persons, including the prime minister and the Punjab chief minister, following an announcement made by the defence minister about how the process of lodging the FIR had begun.
