ISLAMABAD: The nation celebrated golden jubilee of Defence Day on Sunday by paying tributes to the martyrs and reiterating commitment to defend the motherland against all threats. It was on this day in 1965 that the Indian forces crossed international border in the darkness of night to attack Pakistan, but the armed forces, solidly backed by the nation, foiled the enemy’s designs. The day this year assumes special significance in the backdrop of threats being hurled from across the eastern border and the fight against terror. The day dawned with a 31-gun salute in the federal capital and 21-gun salutes in provincial capitals. Special prayers were offered for the progress and prosperity of the country. One-minute silence was observed at 9:29am throughout the country to pay homage to the martyrs of 1965 war. The aim was to convey a message of unity in defending the motherland.
All trains also stopped for one minute, while one-minute silence was observed at all the railway stations and railway offices. This was followed by airing of national anthem by all radio and television networks at 9.30am. Fighter jets of Pakistan Air Force presented a fly-past at a ceremony held in connection with Defence Day at Air Headquarters in Islamabad.
