Consulate confirms six Pakistanis martyred in Makkah crane collapse
RIYADH: Six Pakistani nationals embraced martyrdom as a result of a crane falling down on pilgrims in Masjidul Haram, the Pakistani consulate confirmed on Sunday.
The consulate said that a further 10 Pakistanis were missing.
Arab TV has released the initial report, making public the identities of 106 martyred pilgrims out of the total toll of 107. The report further said the rest who embraced martyrdom include 25 pilgrims from Bangladesh, as many from Iran, 10 from India, 23 from Egypt and 6 from Malaysia.
Pakistani Ambassador Manzoorul Haq said 36 Pakistanis are under treatment in three hospitals in Makkah Mukarama. He said the families of the martyred are present in Makkah.
Earlier on Saturday, the Foreign Office said that as many as 26 Pakistani citizens who were injured on Friday in the crane accident in the Holy Mosque of Makkah are being treated in different hospitals in Saudi Arabia.
A spokesman for the foreign office said no injured pilgrim was in critical condition.
Saudi king vows to find cause of pre-Hajj crane tragedy
Saudi Arabia's King Salman bin Abdulaziz visited injured at the hospitals, including Pakistani nationals, to inquire on their health. King Salman also vowed to find out what caused a crane collapse that killed 107 people at Makkah's Grand Mosque ahead of the annual Hajj pilgrimage.
"We will investigate all the reasons and afterwards declare the results to the citizens," Salman said after visiting the site.
Salman expressed his condolences to the families of the dead, and then visited a local hospital "to check on the health of the injured", the official Saudi Press Agency said.
An investigative committee has "immediately and urgently" begun searching for the cause of the collapse, the Saudi Press Agency reported.
