MQM's call to shut Karachi meets ‘failure’; businesses stay open
* Rangers conduct operation, arrest eight 'miscreants' for threatening traders and common citizens into halting everyday activity

KARACHI: Situation in most parts of Karachi remained normal and business and educational institutions opened as per schedule on Saturday despite an announcement by the Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) that called for a ‘Day of Mourning’ along with an appeal to traders and transporters to keep their businesses shut in response to its allegations that Rangers had killed of three of its workers.

The MQM observed the Day of Mourning but the strike completely failed. Moreover, transport remained on the roads and all the markets stayed open as usual.

Personnel from the Rangers were present in sensitive areas and spots of the metropolis that are routinely crowded.

A Rangers’ spokesman expressed satisfaction over the situation and public resentment against the strike call.

The spokesman revealed that at least 10 target killers and eight others were arrested by Rangers during search operations in different areas for forcing market closure.

He said that three of the arrested target killers were affiliated with the MQM and four belonged to outlawed religious organisations, while three were members of the MQM-Haqiqi group.

The spokesman further said that Nabeel, who is affiliated with the MQM, was arrested during an exchange of fire in which Rangers personnel Tariq was injured.
