‘Killers’ of journalist and clerics arrested in Karachi

KARACHI: The Counter-Terrorism Department of Karachi Police on Sunday claimed to have arrested alleged mastermind of the killing of journalist Aftab Alam, who was shot dead last week.
Sources in the CTD also said that three other suspects, identified by the mastermind, were also taken into custody. They said the arrested men are suspected of being involved in an armed attack on a bakery besides the killing of Aftab Alam in North Karachi.
The sources further said mobile phones and arms were also recovered from the suspects, who had been trained abroad. The well-placed sources said the suspects were being interrogated about more incidents of targeted killings in the city.
Their names have not been disclosed by the investigators. Aftab Alam was killed on Wednesday when gunmen fired shots at his vehicle in North Karachi.
He was targeted outside his residence in 11-C area of North Karachi – when he was leaving to pickup his children from school. Police also arrested the suspected target killer of Mufti Nizamuddin Shamzai, Mufti Mohammad Abdul Majeed Deenpuri, Hafiz Mohammad Ahsan, Mufti Saleh Mohammad Qazi and others. He was identified as Wasi Haider.
