ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is scheduled to address the UN General Assembly on September 30, but there is no indication so far about any meeting with India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, according to Qazi Khalilullah – spokesperson for the Foreign Office.

At his weekly news briefing on Thursday, the spokesperson urged India to honour commitment with regard to observance of ceasefire on the Line of Control and the Working Boundary. He said that Pakistan and Afghanistan were discussing measures to keep the border peaceful. He said that meetings of Adviser on National Security and Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz with the Afghan leaders had been useful in enhancing trust and increasing bilateral cooperation in different sectors.

“Pakistan supports Afghan reconciliation process and hopes Afghan Taliban will renounce violence and return to the negotiating table,” he added. To a question, the spokesman said the issue of the leadership of Afghan Taliban was their internal problem. He said Pakistan and the United States enjoyed good relations and difference of opinion on some issue was a routine matter in terms of relations between states.

He said Pakistan stood for reforms in the United Nations with the consensus of all the member states, but opposed to the addition of the new permanent members to the Security Council. Reiterating Pakistan’s committment to the goals of nuclear non-proliferation, he said Pakistan wanted to join the Nuclear Suppliers Group. We are in contact with the member states on that count,” he added.

Answering a question, Khalilullah said Pakistan condemned desecration of Al-Aqsa Mosque and Israeli violence against peaceful worshippers. He reiterated Pakistan's stand for an independent Palestinian state comprising pre-1967 border with Al-Quds as its capital. “Only an independent Palestinian state could guarantee peace in the region,” he added.
