Accountability is govt’s job, not Rangers’: Imran
NOWSHERA: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan clarified on Thursday that accountability was not Rangers job, rather it is the government’s responsibility.
Addressing a news conference, Imran Khan said Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) were exerting pressure on Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to stop Rangers from continuing the operation in Karachi. The prime minister, he claimed, did not honour a commitment he made to Asif Ali Zardari and initiated a probe against the PPP. The PTI chairman said people in the country wanted across-the-board accountability, and added that the PML-N and PPP had appointed NAB chiefs to hide their corruption.
Imran cited the example of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government where an accountability chief was appointed by the provincial assembly. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Ehtesab Commission, he said, launched a probe against provincial minister Ziaullah Afridi without facing any interference from the party. He called on Afridi to clear his name instead of blaming the PTI. Terming the announcement by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif of the Farmers Relief Package as “pre-poll rigging”, the PTI chief stressed that the package should have been awarded in the budget.
The PTI chairman strongly criticised the Election Commission of Pakistan. “Why did they not allow us to campaign for NA-122 by-polls?” he asked. “Nawaz Sharif’s kisaan package is the biggest pre-poll rigging,” he said. “If he wanted to announce a package, why didn’t he put it in the budget? It is gimmickry to say that the province will pay for half the cost of fertiliser. The province doesn’t have any money. It’s been dispersed already, so how can they pay for it? If he was sincere about the package, he would have announced a relief package when the budget came out.”
