PM Nawaz arrives in New York to attend UNGA session

NEW YORK: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has arrived in New York to lead the Pakistan delegation to the 70th annual session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) which is set to debate key issues related to international peace, security and economic development.

The Premier will address the 70th anniversary session of the UNGA on September 30.

More than 150 heads of state government and other high level delegates are expected to participate in the current session which began on September 15 with the election of the Assembly’s President Mogens Lykketoft of Denmark.

PM Sharif's delegation includes Finance Minister Ishaq Dar and his Advisor on National Security and Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz.

It will be the first time that top leaders of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States will gather at UN Headquarters.

In New York, the 193 member Assembly will begin its annual high level debate on Sept 28 and Prime Minister Sharif will address the 193 member body on Sept 30.

On September 27, PM Nawaz will address a UN Summit which will adopt of the Post 2015 Development Agenda. Described as comprehensive and transformative the agenda comprises 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which will replace the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

Prime Minister Sharif will also co-host with President Barak Obama of the United States and other world leaders a Summit on UN Peacekeeping which would reaffirm the political commitment and support of member states to UN Peacekeeping.

The Pakistani leader would also participate in a high level roundtable on South Cooperation and the Global Leaders Meeting on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment being hosted by President Xi Jinping of China.
