Peaceful Afghanistan can open regional connectivity: army chief
General Sharif says practical steps needed to manage Pak-Afghan borders for gainful conclusion of Zarb-e-Azb

MUNICH - Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif on Tuesday said that practical steps are required to manage Pakistan-Afghan borders for gainful conclusion of operation Zarb-e-Azb.
He made these remarks while addressing the CENCOM’s South Asia Security Conference in Marshal Centre in Munich, Germany. The conference discussed regional peace and security with special focus on perpetual instability in Afghanistan. Addressing the participants, General Sharif said that Afghan instability had telling effects on the region. He stressed on all stake holders to revive reconciliation process.
He said, “Despite hurdles, peace and reconciliation are of vital importance for larger settlement in Afghanistan.” He further highlighted that the regional instability has deeply affected socio-eco climate in Pakistan. “A peaceful Afghanistan can open regional connectivity,” he said. The army chief expressed that benefits of China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project can be shared which is essential for socio-economic development of Pakistan to address menace of extremism.
General Sharif’s visit to Germany comes just a day after Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif met German Chancellor Angela Merkel on the sidelines of the 70th session of the United Nations General Assembly. Merkel appreciated progress made by Pakistan in its efforts to counter terrorism and acknowledged the nation’s contribution towards regional peace and stability.
