ECP declares PM’s package for farmers a violation of electoral code

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) announced on Wednesday that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s package for farmers (Kisan Package) is a violation of the electoral code.

The ECP has decided to stop implementation of the package till December 3.

A high-level meeting of the ECP took place yesterday where the ECP members were briefed by the Secretary National Food Security and Secretary Information on the package.

The commission had summoned an explanation from the two secretaries regarding the package to decide whether the project was in contravention of the rules of the code of conduct issued for elections.

PM Nawaz had announced on September 15, a comprehensive Rs341 billion relief package for farmers, with special cash relief for cotton and rice cultivators.

Addressing a gathering of farmers at the Jinnah Convention Centre, the prime minister said he felt the pain of peasants and farmers and wanted to announce the relief package without any delay.
