‘Mayor working without Sindh govt’s support’
KARACHI: Muttahida Quami Movement-Pakistan Chief Farooq Sattar has said that forcing people through coercive measures to join any party does not ensure the reliability of that party.
Talking to media after meeting with the spiritual leader of Bohra community, Dr Mufaddal Saifuddin who is in the country for observing Muharram, Farooq said that Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan has unity among its ranks and MQM-Pakistan fully supports its elected local bodies leadership.
"Those who are proudly announcing departure of our members, need to know that those joining us are in such great numbers that can not be counted," Sattar claimed.
To a question he answered that mayor and deputy mayor are not being replaced if there is any report of corruption then action may be taken against them. He said that the party is thoroughly screening the performance of every department.
Responding to a question he said that Mayor Karachi, Waseem Akhtar, is doing his utmost to provide best service to citizens despite lack of funds and without provincial support. He lamented that the local government and its institutions are powerless and have no authority. KW&SB and SWMB is working under provisional government, he noted.
Farooq Sattar said that Chief Minister Sindh Murad Ali Shah also wants to resolve issues of the city through consultation but he has some issues as well.
The MQM-P chief said that in 2016-17, Rs 14 billion were issued, out of which Rs 4 billion were used for development projects. Soon we are going to overcome the situation and people will see good change in city, he added.
Separately, Mayor Wasim Akhtar said, "We want to work together with Sindh government and it was the duty of the chief minister Sindh to sit with us for solving city problems."
Presently topmost issue in Karachi relates to sewerage system for which KWSB officials will be contacted. People should know how much money was received for such works. Funds amounting to Rs 14 billion and not Rs 8 billion were released in 2016-17 but these were handed over to the former administrator and also include payment for salaries, pensions of staff and non development expenditure whereas 4billion rupees earmarked for development works. The schemes which were made by former administrators are now being completed by us and the current year budget was also prepared by us in which citizen's schemes have also been incorporated and their priorities were taken into account. Development works will continue despite limited resources.
He expressed these views on a visit of District Central along with Farooq Sattar to check and review the road carpeting and other uplift works in Hussainabad area.
