Legislature Lacks Moral Legitimacy to Create New Provinces: PTI
Islamabad: The opposition leadership on Thursday claimed that the current legislature is deprived of public mandate and moral legitimacy, thus having no moral or political authority to make any kind of constitutional amendment or create new provinces.
“Any such constitutional amendment made by the assembly deprived of public mandate that affects the state structure, fundamental rights of the people or the spirit of the Constitution, will not be considered a mere political move but an attack on the existence, unity and constitutional basis of Pakistan,” they warned.
A statement was issued at the end of the meeting, which took place at the residence of Vice-Chairman of Tehreek Tahaffuz Aiyeen-e-Pakistan ex-senator Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar, and attended by Leader of Opposition in the Senate Allama Nasir Abbas Jafri, who is also the vice-chairman of the opposition alliance and TTAP Spokesman Akhunzada Hussain. They contended that fundamental changes in the Constitution cannot be made through a controversial and public mandate-deprived parliament and it would be an attack on the very existence of Pakistan. They stressed that the opposition parties will strongly resist any such attempt, considering it an act against the people, the Constitution and democracy.
In the meeting, serious concern was also expressed over the issue of secret trials in anti-terrorism courts by the Punjab government.
The “unjust” imprisonment of Mushtaq Ahmed Khan and the ongoing legal proceedings against him were also discussed in detail. – The News
